Today I will explain why building a timber frame around an interlocking body is hopelessly foolish and is solely a money-making scam by unscrupulous builders and bodge artists who sell log cabins. A single-skin 44mm or 70mm log cabin, interlocked, is not intended to have an external, internal skin applied. Why? It is simple because it travels and shrinks, and once its movement is complete, it will move indefinitely, depending on the weather. Unfortunately, there are many uneducated people out there who only see pound signs when you approach them about an insulated cabin, and their response, in order to get more money from you, is that battening the external or interior walls is the best course of action for that perfect insulated house. Rubbish. Also, we see so many foolish, unskilled weekend builders; screw the logs together? What the —K? Who said fastening the log together with long screws was an excellent idea?
Too many cabin builders have too many ideas on how to build a log cabin, and the more films I see on TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube, the worse the cabins become. So, why do they put screws in? I believe it is because they don’t know what day it is, and what they’re smoking could be one of the reasons. You never screw an interlocking cabin together. I can hear you all asking why. Simply put, once you have completed the cabin, it will begin to shrink. This is a natural process that must not be hampered; otherwise, you will have major problems with your cabin very quickly. You are effectively preventing it from moving in any direction, including downward. In the summer, the logs will begin to shrink, leaving gaps in the walls, and if you are extremely unlucky, the entire cabin will be a perilous construction. You cannot screw each log together. Next, putting an external or internal frame around the cabin will be a nightmare after half a year; if it’s external, the inside dries out; the external is dealing with mother nature, so you have the pull on the fixings all year round and if your dumb fitting team has screwed all the logs together, your problems will be exponentially worse, potentially resulting in gaps opening in the walls. Windows and doors become loose, and, in the worst-case scenario, the roof becomes unstable. This is no joke. It is a fact. This is why I designed the twin skin system many years ago. I have designed and manufactured this system in many different ways, and the best is as it is now. The problem with using a dovetail joint for the internal wall to fix itself to the external wall within the cavity is that as the logs shrink, both internal and external shrink at different rates, and the internal log tends not to slide down the dovetail cut, causing problems. Unless you go with Glulam, which is twice, if not three times the price, the consequence is the same: difficulties. Before anyone asks me, yes, we screw on the roof boards and flooring, etc, but we do not fix the logs together; our interlocking joint is super strong and super water-proof. So, my twin skin design for an interlocking cabin of any size is the best way to manufacture the best insulated cabin; it is not screwed together, it moves freely, but it is strong and super safe; it is a great investment; we know how to manufacture and assemble it, and the result is a fantastic building at a fantastic price. I believe that what I built many years ago was the greatest approach to manufacturing a log cabin that is insulated in a variety of ways. We have the greatest windows and doors in the industry, and our pricing is fair. Consider a 90-square-meter building with 2 beds, a bathroom, a living room, a kitchen area, etc, with 340mm walls (70mm x 70mm) and a 200mm void for less than €45,000 ex works, complete with double-glazed windows and doors and toughened glass. It sounds amazing, and it is. Please send us an email.

Timber frame construction is appealing to both homeowners and builders because it is both aesthetically pleasing and environmentally sustainable. Our goal is to provide you a complete understanding of timber frame construction, from its history and benefits to the step-by-step process and maintenance.
An Overview of Timber Frame Construction
Timber frame construction is a centuries-old technique that has been used for generations. Its history may be traced back to mediaeval Europe, where it was extensively used to construct massive cathedrals and castles. This historic technique is having a comeback nowadays due to its exceptional lifespan and eco-friendliness.
Chapter 1: The Advantages of Timber Frame Construction
1.1. Timber frame construction offers several advantages, including:
• Timber frames provide excellent insulation, cutting energy consumption and utility costs. • Timber is a renewable resource, it is an environmentally friendly choice.
1.2 Timber frames are known for their long life, with some structures lasting centuries.
1.3 Timber enables both intricate architectural ideas and open floor plans.
Chapter 2: Design and Planning
2.1 Precision planning and design are the foundations of any successful wood frame project. Architects and engineers work together to create exact designs that take into account every component of the construction.
2.2 Timber Selection. The selection of the proper timber is important to the project’s success. The type of wood, grade, and moisture level must all be rigorously evaluated to ensure structural stability. Stick building on site is the worst technique to build a timber frame building; timber frame houses must come in factory-made, 99% finished panels. Choosing the correct organisation with a history of integrity and high levels of quality is also important.
2.3 Joinery and Building. One of the most striking features of timber frame building is the exact joinery that holds the framework together. Craftsmen create joints like mortise and tenon, resulting in a strong and long-lasting foundation. This is determined by whether you are constructing a post-and-beam wooden house or segments. The difference is enormous, as portions, and its potential to be almost Passive air tightness is quite important, whereas post and beam are not.being divided into segments
2.4 Raising the Frame. The frame is created on-site, and this process, known as “raising the frame,” is a big deal. Careful coordination and expert labour are necessary to ensure that all components fit perfectly.
2.5 Once the structure is in place, the enclosure phase, which includes adding walls, roofing, and insulation, begins.
Chapter 3: Inspections of Timber Frames
3.1 Regular inspections are necessary to maintain the longevity of your timber frame construction. Look for evidence of wear, pest infestations, and moisture damage.
3.2 Cleaning and Refinishing. Cleaning and refinishing timber frames on a regular basis helps to protect the wood and preserve its natural beauty.
3.3 Timber frame construction is a time-honored and environmentally beneficial building method that offers numerous benefits. Its ageless beauty and structural stability make it a great choice for homeowners and builders alike. By following these instructions and ensuring sufficient upkeep, you can enjoy the beauty and longevity of a timber frame construction that stands the test of time.
Chapter 4: Building Speed

An Detailed Guide to Timber Frame Home Insulation Insulation is a critical component that is frequently overlooked while building your dream wood frame home. Proper insulation not only assures year-round comfort, but it also helps with energy efficiency and cost savings. As experts in the area, we will walk you through all you need to know about choosing the correct insulation for your wood frame home in this article.
Understanding Timber Frame Building Before getting into insulating choices, it’s critical to first understand timber frame construction. Timber framing is a traditional building technique that uses huge timber beams and posts to create a house’s structural framework. These frameworks are then filled with a variety of materials, including insulation, to give comfort and weather protection.
Considerations When Choosing Insulation
Thermal Performance and R-Value When choosing insulation for your wood frame home, the R-value is the most important thing to consider. The R-value of an insulating material evaluates its heat resistance. In layman’s words, it determines how well the insulation resists heat flow. The higher the R-value, the better the thermal performance of the insulation.
You’ll want insulation with a high R-value when insulating a timber frame home to keep it warm in the winter and cool in the summer. Spray foam insulation and rigid foam boards are two common insulation materials with high R-values.
Water Resistance Moisture ingress into timber frame homes can lead to structural damage and mould growth. As a result, choosing moisture-resistant insulating materials is critical. Closed-cell spray foam insulation, which forms a barrier against moisture intrusion, is an ideal solution in this regard.
Environmental Concerns There are various sustainable insulating alternatives available for people that prioritise eco-friendly options. Recycled denim insulation and cellulose insulation derived from recycled paper materials are two examples. These materials not only provide great insulation, but they are also less harmful to the environment.
Installation Procedures The efficiency of your insulation is dependent on proper installation. Batt insulation, blown-in insulation, and spray foam insulation are all methods of installing insulation. The approach you choose may be determined by your budget as well as the specific needs of your wood frame home.
Spray foam insulation is one of the recommended insulation options. Spray foam insulation is a popular alternative for timber-framed homes due to its high R-value and resilience to dampness. It forms a smooth and airtight barrier, preventing heat loss and lowering energy bills.
Advantages:
R-value high Superior moisture resistance qualities of air sealing Long life expectancy Drawbacks:
Higher initial investment
Insulation using Rigid Foam Board Rigid foam board insulation provides superior thermal performance as well as moisture resistance. Because it is simple to cut and install, it is a favourite choice among builders.
Advantages:
R-value high Moisture-resistant Simple to use and install Applications that are versatile Drawbacks:
Additional air sealing may be required.
In conclusion, selecting the appropriate insulation for your wood frame home is critical for assuring comfort, energy efficiency, and long-term structural integrity. Because of their superior thermal performance and moisture resistance, we recommend spray foam insulation or rigid foam board insulation. If environmental sustainability is important to you, look into recycled denim insulation and cellulose insulation. You may enjoy a cosy and eco-friendly timber frame house for years to come if you make an informed decision.
When it comes to insulation, remember that investing in quality materials and appropriate installation is an investment in the future of your home. Make the correct decision today to live in a pleasant and energy-efficient timber frame home.

The designer, manufacturer, and first to commercialise the Twinskin system is the Boss of Factory Cabins; comprehending this form of engineering employing timber is an art. Too many manufacturers do not truly understand what we designed and how to manufacture it; the range of tolerances and quality of build we have encountered over the last 14 years at various shows throughout Europe has shown us the bad, very bad, and exceptionally bad; we have never found a quality twin-skin cabin that, in our opinion, met all of the criteria we set out at the outset.
Thank you for reading this. I hope you have learned a few things in this blog about my twinskin system. What’s absolutely true, they are the best of the best twinskins in the world.
The ongoing housing crisis in Co. Cork has led to a significant rise in the number of planning applications for log cabins to be used as homes. These cabins are a more affordable option for young couples who cannot afford to buy traditional concrete or brick homes, which cost on average four times the price of a cabin. These cabins can cost between €60,000-€80,000 to construct and are eco-friendly and relatively cheap to heat.
However, the Cork County Council generally only grants permission for such homes to be constructed on the edge of forestry. This policy has led to several applicants being refused, including those who live in rural areas but not next to forests. The current restrictive rules around where such structures can be built have prompted councilors to call for a review of the Rural Design Guide.
Fianna Fáil councillor William O’Leary has received numerous complaints from constituents who have had their planning applications for log cabins refused. He has called for a relaxation of the designated areas where such cabins can be built, stating that the Housing SPC (Special Purposes Committee) must address this issue as a matter of urgency.
Log cabins could also provide cheap accommodation for companies needing workers and enable older couples to downsize and give their homes to younger families. Fine Gael councillor Anthony Barry has stated that log cabins are a sustainable way forward and that we must look at alternatives to traditional housing options.
Council chief executive Tim Lucey has welcomed the motion by Mr. O’Leary and has acknowledged the need for a serious discussion around this issue. Michael Lynch, the council’s director of planning, has also stated that his unit is prepared to look into the request.
Reviewing the Policy for Building Log Cabins in Co. Cork
The Cork County Council’s policy of only allowing log cabins to be built on the edge of forestry has become a controversial issue in the county. Young couples, who cannot afford traditional homes, are increasingly seeking this cheaper option to get a foot on the property ladder. However, the current restrictive rules around where such structures can be built have led to several applicants being refused.
This has prompted councilors to call for a review of the Rural Design Guide, which restricts the designated areas where such cabins can be built. They argue that log cabins could provide a sustainable way forward and that the council needs to address this issue urgently.
The Housing SPC must look at this as a matter of urgency. Log cabins could be a major factor in tackling the housing crisis, and could also provide cheap accommodation for companies needing workers and enabling older couples to downsize and give their homes to younger families.
Log cabins are also eco-friendly and relatively cheap to heat, making them a more affordable option for young couples who cannot afford traditional concrete or brick homes. With the ongoing housing crisis, it’s essential to explore alternative housing options, and log cabins could be a viable solution.
The Cork County Council has acknowledged the need for a serious discussion around this issue, and the council’s director of planning has stated that his unit is prepared to look into the request. Hopefully, a review of the Rural Design Guide will result in a more flexible policy that takes into account the unique circumstances of each applicant, allowing more young couples to get a foot on the property ladder.
Conclusion
The ongoing housing crisis in Co. Cork has led to a sharp rise in planning applications for log cabins to be used as homes. These cabins are a more affordable option for young couples who cannot afford traditional homes, which cost on average four times the price of a cabin. However, the Cork County Council’s policy of only allowing log cabins to be built on the edge of forestry has led to several applicants.

The windows can also be opened to let in natural light and provide a view of the surrounding wildlife, making the cabin even more pleasant.
The cabin’s 28mm floor is also an excellent feature because it is robust and lasting, as well as easy to clean. This makes the cabin an excellent choice for camp sites and AirBNB owners, as it can withstand the wear and strain of repeated guests.
Overall, a twinskin log cabin is an excellent investment for campgrounds and AirBNB owners. It has good insulation, double-glazed tilt-and-turn windows, and a solid and durable floor, making it an excellent alternative for anyone wishing to profit from their land. A twinskin log cabin, with its excellent insulation and features, is an excellent solution for individuals wishing to generate a passive income from their land.

Due to the different materials used in construction, tiny homes are not the
same as insulated double-skin log cabins. Cladding, panelling, and other
materials are frequently used in tiny houses to provide insulation and protection
from the weather. They are typically constructed with timber frames. Due to
their lower size and lack of need for the same structural calculations, tiny
homes do not have the same structural requirements as double-skin log cabins.
Due to their smaller size, as well as the materials and labour necessary for
their design and construction, tiny houses always cost more than log
cabins.
The issue with tiny houses, and sadly, there are issues, is that they are
constructed using a timber frame, if Factory Cabins were going to
manufacturer a Tiny House, we would make them to building regs, we would
manufacture them to TEK17 (The Norwegian building regulations, or Tek 17, are
known all around the world for their emphasis on highly insulated timber frame
construction. This type of building is incredibly energy efficient and is
becoming increasingly popular in all countries. It is also incredibly
eco-friendly and can even lower the amount of energy needed to keep a home
comfortable. The regulations are strict and highly enforced, making them a great
choice for anyone who wants to construct a high-quality and energy-efficient
home). Because most UK construction companies are arrogant and prefer to
treat customers unfairly (they are greedy), this type of timber building would
sadly cost you an arm and a leg. Because we don’t, we consistently receive
repeat business.
The difference is £1000 ex works per square metre our price, and in 2024 UK
companies were charging a whopping £1,750 up to £3,000 per sq. m.
and the building was not anywhere near as insulated or manufactured as
solidly.
This is easy to say, try and explain, but in reality, its hard to picture.
so if you think of a phone book and a piece of paper, the piece of paper sadly
does not have much in the way of strength compared to the phone book, and that’s
the difference between what you receive from us and what you don’t receive from
the UK-based building companies.
And that also applies to tiny houses; the quality of the strength is very
much an issue, and the quality of the build is also an issue; most will stick
build it in the back, so if it rains everything is wet, and if they have just
started, it means your tiny house is core wet to start with. Not a great start
and leads to lots of rot in the centre of the walls. And as we know, mould can
kill. Sadly, many people have fallen for this over the years, and it’s a massive
problem to get rid of. Now, a lot of house manufacturers in the UK do stick
build, that means your back garden is there factory work space, Say that’s ok
for timber to get a bit wet, well, that may be the case if they manufacture your
tiny house with cheap timber, but we use only the best KD C24, and it is unwise
to get KD which means Kiln Dried timber wet, its KD because it must last
minimum 100 years+ and C24 is a visual grade, that means its quality through
and through.
So, you have learned a lot in this blog about what a tiny house should be
manufactured from, only really, as you want it to last a long time and to be
very energy efficient.
BUT THEY COST!!!!!!
Twinskin Flat Packed Log Cabins are perfect for that extra-insulated building
in the garden, easy to get into the garden, and easy to assemble, and our
windows and doors are not some ghastly PVC or awful cheap put together in a
hurry affair , ours are superb quality manufactured from Joinery glue, which
means no cold bridging, 28mm glass, and all German hardware; they are simply
the best in the industry as a standard window, most companies would charge you £1000 a double door and 700 for a double window if you wanted them manufactured
As a matter of note, I designed the twin skin system and have
the first ever 44mm x 44mm with a 50mm gap in the garden, it’s a 3m x 2m dog
kennel! And that’s why we built the first; obviously, there were no windows or doors, but
it has 2 rooms.
Lots of people make the mistake in thinking that a dog goes into
his or her kennel and likes the cold air running over him or her all night, they
don’t; a dog needs to go into a two-room kennel with a heated floor for winter, where
they can go around the corner and then in the back, and because of the base, walls and
roof are insulated, the flooring is made from non-bug carpeting, and
the whole pent roof lifts off, so cleaning is easy if you have a good friend that
will help you lift it off, as it is insulated and has gutters attached, etc, but
Your best friend (dog) is as snug as a bug in a rug!
The Twinskin system is perfect for going up two stories, and it’s easy to
adjust the amount of insulation (foil back) you add to the Twin Skin Log Cabin.
we can increase the thickness of the logs and insulation, depending on what you
need, where you are, and what kind of conditions you want the cabin to cohabitate in.
in. It’s amazing to think that you can have 44mm x 44mm or 70mm x 70mm; we can even do 90mm x 90mm, which would make the walls 280mm thick, There is nothing that would blow that over, we would rod itif it’s needed to the concert base, and that’s the beauty of our twin skins.
We can also manufacture shutters for the windows and doors if you put them in
a holiday park surroundings and wanted to leave them over the winter empty, and
unattended, you can shutter them up, or if you’re on the Greek Islands,
your customers want to go to sleep; just shut the shutters and the sun disappears.
our Twinskin Insulated Log Cabins are so versatile and cost-effective.
Sometimes your house is just not big enough, and you need extra space, then you either think, dreaded BS 3632 Caravan, ( the most expensive garbage sadly our country has ever invented) or a Quick Grown Pine Baltic Cabin from some company that sells crap at low prices and calls them residential which are manufactured from fast grown baltic pine, or you think, quality, and sustainability and you think logcabinslv.co.uk. Not so cheap but quality and quality that will last, and prices that will astound you.
Its easy to make a quality log cabin, you just need the right ingredients, and the right machinery, the right lumber and the right management that like us wants to manufacture the best of the best, and keep pricing low, unlike sadly 99.9% of cabin companies in the Baltics/ UK that can charge as much as 5000 to 10.000 more for a cabin than us, pure greed and now rather stupid. Brexit means, European Cabins will cost more and more, and from us, well, less and less.
Passive Timber Frame LV design Houses.
If you are looking for a quality passive timber frame solution we have it, as we have a full CNC line and also a full bespoke service that is able to offer not just quality log cabins for sale in the UK, but also timber frame buildings, that are much needed for the housing market at the moment at a fraction of the costs that are being banneded about by most manufacturers in the UK, 1000 pounds per sq meter for a A++ house is F—-ing disgusting and stupidly overpriced .. actually Greedy. Like most UK companies that import from abroad, who actually know nothing about the product, just sell it on and hope for the best, we at LV know our product, and lets not forget, the timber that the UK companies use to be able to purchase now can’t, which means home grown, quick gown timber will be used in timber frames in the UK, LV use only graded Russian, tight Grain C24 , which means quality from the inside out, do not forget LV manufacture it, and design it, and truly believe in it. If your looking for quality, then speak to us…
This Blog today is just to speak quickly about timber frame buildings and log cabins, and how they are greatly different.
There are quite a few agents/dealers in the UK- Europe that will offer you a log cabin, and call it a residential building. But the difference between the two is night and day.
A residential building, timber frame, is designed to be a 12-month a year dwelling. A single skin log cabin is not.
In certain countries where rainfall is minimal and the season is hot then very cold, then a single skin 220mm Scandinavian log cabin is great, but in some parts of Europe-UK where the weather is very damp, this kind of structure has its limitations due to rainfall.
When a company offers you a single skin log cabin say in 70mm solid timber and offers to clad the building inside, this still does not get around the moisture issue.
This year we have had hundreds of people call us and ask us if our twin skin log cabins (solid timber) will meet building regulations, and sat tests, etc, and the honest answer is yes, but we need to redesign the whole cabin. And we 9 times out of 10 ask them to look at the timber frame selection, which we have over one hundred designs in our gallery.
Timber frame is truly the only way to go if you are on a budget, and you are looking for super insulted building, which will also last the test of time.
Below are some photos of Timber Frame buildings we have manufactured and built.
